Maintenance Optimization of Water Distribution System: Tabu Search Approach

Maintenance of water distribution systems is becoming a critical infrastructure problem. Good maintenance practices are necessary to extend the life of water distribution system components and an optimal maintenance effort can further prolong their useful life. The decision making problem of determining the best maintenance strategy which would minimize the total discounted maintenance cost over the planning horizon and maximize water distribution system availability is a complex combinatorial optimization problem. In this chapter, a Tabu Search technique based implementation to solve this problem, is presented. The application of the Tabu search algorithm is demonstrated to help the water management expert determine the costeffective maintenance strategy for the water distribution system.
